The Future of Aviation & Aerospace

Welcome (Back) to the South

What took place on a clear December day in 1903 would forever change the world. The birth of one of the greatest inventions created an industry unmatched in growth and innovation:  Aviation was born.  Just as the Wright Brothers soared through the virgin North Carolina sky, innovation in aviation continues to reach unimaginable heights.

Wayne County and the Eastern Region of North Carolina, are emerging as the next Aviation and Aerospace hot spot.  With the North Carolina Global TransPark – a 2,400-acre (over 5,000 acres developable) industrial airport site featuring an 11,500-foot runway – just down the road, and the expertise of AS 9001 and ISO 9100 certified companies at your fingertips, it’s no wonder that aerospace companies are taking notice.

Wayne County is the proud home of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.  The strong relationship established between the base and the Wayne County community has been an integral part of our ability to attract and retain a highly skilled and qualified workforce consisting of separating and retiring military and trailing spouses.  More than half of retirees from Seymour Johnson AFB choose to stay in Wayne County.  The availability of this workforce makes Wayne County an undeniably attractive location for the aerospace industry.

Perhaps the most significant piece is the availability of a certified workforce.  WORKS – an internationally recognized workforce development program – creates a process for developing a documented workforce pipeline whose skill level is measurable and can be matched to occupation or job profiles conducted to identify necessary workplace skills.  The unprecedented success of the WORKS initiative is directly beneficial to those companies looking to locate in Wayne County.  Wayne County ranks #1 for Career Readiness Certificates Awarded, and has solidified its place as a true innovator in workforce development.  Go ahead, take advantage of us.  We don’t mind.

So, are you looking for the perfect location for your aerospace project? Why not consider the birth place of flight as your next destination?  We’ve got you covered.  The availability of a certified workforce and support from AS 9001 and ISO 9100 certified companies provides just the foundation you need to successfully locate your company in Wayne County, North Carolina.

Soar Successfully, My Friend.

He Hated to Say “No”…

Somewhere between the grind of a CNC lathe and the hum of a Dotco, a grand idea was born.  An idea that would morph into a two year process – complete with the proverbial ups and downs, occasional hair pulling, and the “why have I done this to myself?”s. An idea that would transform a simple business into a diverse company, with a wider range of services.  An idea that would, among many other things, catapult a small machine shop in Goldsboro – Wayne County to unimaginable heights, all while in the midst of a recession.  What prompted this direction altering decision at the least likely time?  Simple… he “hated saying no.”

In 1985, Roebuck Precision Machine, Inc. (RPM, Inc.) came on the scene in Wayne County, North Carolina.   Jesse Roebuck, Vice President of RPM, Inc. took ownership of a small machine shop known as Modern Machine.  After 22 years as a machine repairman in the United States Navy, Mike Roebuck, President of RPM, Inc., joined his brother, Jesse, and set out to make a name for their company in Wayne County.

Left: Jesse Roebuck - VP/RPM, Inc. Right: Mike Roebuck - President/RPM, Inc.

In the beginning, RPM, Inc. was known as the little machine shop that could, providing your standard machining services: manufacturing, fabrication, reverse engineering, and design.  But Mike and Jesse had big plans for their small wonder.  When the recession hit in 2008, business began to slow but remained steady; however, Mike was not content with merely scraping by.  He began to toy with the idea of becoming an industrial products supplier; to diversify his products and services.  For many small businesses like RPM, Inc., the task of creating a ‘supplier’ side of the house would seem daunting.  Not for Mike.

He saw a niche.  Because of his prior military service, Mike always felt a part of the military family.  And why not?  Twenty two years served in the US Navy, in the exact same career field he now owned a business in – he had the connections, access, and know-how to get his foot in the door of military machine shops, except for one thing.

“I would have a great conversation with someone.  I’d talk about what services we provided, what materials and tools we could sell them, and even had a nice, glossy catalog as a leave behind… but the one question that killed me every time was “So, do you have a GSA contract?”  I hated saying no.”

                                                    -Mike Roebuck, President RPM, Inc.

Who knew two little letters would completely change the course of a small machine shop, and transform it into the “#1 GSA Supplier in Eastern North Carolina?”  Mike exchanged those two, little letters for three very important ones: G – S – A.  Roebuck Precision Machine, Inc. has recently been awarded their U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Schedule Contract, number GS-21F-0074W, in two categories: Tools Powered and Tools Non-powered.  RPM, Inc. is now one of four GSA approved companies in the state for tools non-powered, and one of only two GSA approved companies for tools powered.  A two year process that tested the limits of human patience, but more rewarding that Mike or Jesse could ever have imagined.

RPM, Inc. currently has eight employees with plans to add to that number.

“I want to be a good steward of commerce in Wayne County.  I want to grow my business and put Wayne County citizens to work, and ultimately make Wayne County a better place to live.”

                                                         -Mike Roebuck, President RPM, Inc.

Now armed with their GSA contract, RPM, Inc. is definitely on the right track.  And with a clear purpose in mind, the possibilities are limitless.

Our Economy: Stable. Resilient.

Stable and Resilient: Two very powerful words that truly describe Wayne County’s economy.  Even in the midst of one of the worst economic downturns in recent history, Wayne County has managed to weather the storm, sustaining minimal damage.

A healthy, diversified industrial base, a highly-skilled and certified workforce, and unwavering support and forward-thinking from our community leaders have combined to solidify our position as one of the most business-friendly counties in North Carolina. And we have never had a more motivated and forward-driven economic development team committed to ensuring Wayne County is strategically positioned for growth when the fog of economic instability begins to lift.

The diversity of industry within Wayne County has been instrumental in the stability of our economy.  There are over 75 companies that call Wayne County home, including several international firms and privately held companies, some of which consistently rank among North Carolina’s top 100.  Many of the products in our homes, in our vehicles, on convenience store shelves and anywhere in between are either manufactured in or distributed from right here in Wayne County.  Even in the midst of economic adversity, businesses and industries managed to create 690 new jobs and pump nearly $32 million of new investment into Wayne County in 2008.

Striking the perfect balance between retention and recruitment efforts is key to establishing and maintaining a healthy economic base.   This means that business and industry in Wayne County can be assured that they will be supported 100%, from the initial stages of recruitment to continued support long after the deal is done.

Faced with an unavoidable side-effect of an economic downturn, that being job loss, the resilience of Wayne County and its most valuable asset, its people, is evidenced by the development and success of the WORKS initiative.  A qualified and Career Certified workforce sets Wayne County apart from any other county in the state of North Carolina.

Unique in its vision and design, WORKS (Wayne Occupational Readiness Keys for Success) is a partnership among economic, education, and workforce development stakeholders in Wayne County and a shining example of how this eastern NC county has come together to ensure that our workforce will meet the demands of the changing marketplace and thrive in a knowledge and skills-based global economy.  Wayne County ranks #1 in North Carolina for the number of Career Readiness Certificates awarded, which is a true testament to our success in supplying the best and most qualified workforce possible.

Wayne County, North Carolina has it right: matching the demands of business and industry to the needs of the community equals stability.  And instead of rolling with the recessional punches, Wayne County has taken its place as a leader in workforce development in North Carolina, demonstrating the resilient nature of our community and our people.

Carolina Sun Warms My Thoughts

As I recline back in my chair and peer out of my office window, the Carolina sun warms my thoughts…

What does this year have in store? What grand surprises, announcements, tragedies are lurking in the not so distant future? And what, if anything, can I do to influence the progress of time?

The success of our community weighs heavy on my mind. Creating jobs for our people is at the heart of what I do. Promoting the county as a great place to do business is what I do. And encouraging people who may have never considered Wayne County as a great place to live, raise a family, and enjoy a successful and rewarding career is certainly a viable avenue to influence the progress of time.

So as I ponder the future, it is clear to me that I have the ability to appreciate the ‘now’ and a desire to impact the future of Wayne County in a BIG way.

Wow, what an awesome responsibility!
